fm1buddy vs FM-1 Companion
A side-by-side of fm1buddy, a companion for the M-VAVE FM-1 on a single ~$22 board, and the FM-1 Companion, checked against both projects’ code and docs as of October 24, 2026. Its verdict: fm1buddy covers more of what FM-1 owners need for less money.
- Claims it disputes: Bluetooth MIDI keyboards (the Companion waits for them to connect rather than connecting to them), the number of SLOOP punch-in FX, backups and firmware installs only for SLOOP, how long the Studio has run on real hardware, eleven meters versus ten, USB audio limits, battery life on the Pocket, setup needing a computer, the planned card slot, and network MIDI’s missing recovery journal.
- Features it calls overstated: Bluetooth audio delay and dropouts with Wi-Fi on, the web app needing Wi-Fi, the Studio’s single-touch resistive screen for pads and faders, sampler latency, the headphone jack, mixer gain above 100%, MIDI clock timing, and boot time.
- Head to head: cost, assembly, install, boot time, firmware support, bricked-FM-1 recovery, touch screen, USB disk mode, DX7 banks, fomajam support, a 3D-printable case and testing.
